Big Sandy Regional Detention Center, or BSRDC, is the working jail path for Magoffin County bookings. A booking can end with a community release on bond, court order, time served, or sentence expiration. It can also end because another county, the Kentucky Department of Corrections, a federal authority, or another agency takes custody. The destination determines which search works next.

Use “released” only when the record supports a return to the community. A roster card that vanishes proves only that the person is no longer displayed there. The facility's custody-event or movement log is the best local record for the event type and time. A Magoffin court record can show the legal authority, such as a bond order or judgment, but it does not always show the exact moment the person left the building.

Confirm Big Sandy Release Records

Begin with the official BSRDC roster route. It opens the current JailTracker service. A displayed card supports present roster status at the time checked. An absent card does not supply a release date or type, because no official former-booking, 24-hour, or 72-hour archive was verified.

1. Search the current roster and note the date and time.
2. Call BSRDC with the full name, date of birth or booking number, and a narrow date range.
3. Ask whether the booking ended and whether staff can identify release or transfer.
4. Check Kentucky VINELink for a reported custody event.
5. Review the Magoffin court docket for the order or disposition.
6. Search KOOL if state custody or supervision is plausible.
7. Request the BSRDC booking and movement record when exact details matter.

For identity, compare more than a name. A booking number, date of birth, case number, booking date, photograph, or arresting agency can prevent a false match. Keep each status label intact. A KOOL prison location means state confinement continued, while a probation or parole location can reflect community supervision.

Call before sending a request so staff can identify the current records custodian and accepted delivery method. The published administrative hours apply to office contact and inspection. They are not release-processing hours, and they do not tell a family when a person will exit.

A narrow Kentucky Open Records Act request should identify the full name, date of birth or booking number, and date range. Ask for existing nonexempt records such as the booking sheet, custody-event or movement log, release date and time, release or movement type, authorizing record, public transfer destination, and booking photograph. Request electronic copies in their existing form when practical. If part is withheld, KRS 61.878(4) supports production of reasonably segregable nonexempt portions.

KRS 61.880(1) generally calls for a written response within five business days after receipt. That is a response rule, not a promise that every requested record will be immediately available. BSRDC may apply exemptions or redactions. Kentucky Attorney General decision 21-ORD-013 confirms the facility participates in the open-record process, although its holding on personnel material does not settle access to every release record.

Big Sandy Regional Jail Role

BSRDC is a regional county detention center in Paintsville. Big Sandy Authority operates it for Johnson, Lawrence, Magoffin, and Martin counties. Magoffin has no verified active standalone county jail, so the regional facility is the primary local custody page. It should not be confused with United States Penitentiary Big Sandy, a federal prison in Martin County. The federal prison uses Bureau of Prisons tools, not this JailTracker roster.

The facility holds people connected to several counties and stages of a case. A Magoffin arresting agency, BSRDC, and the Magoffin court therefore may each hold a different record. The sheriff may hold the arrest or incident record. BSRDC holds its booking and movement record. The clerk holds judicial documents. KDOC becomes the right source if a felony commitment moves the person into state custody.

Big Sandy Programs and Property

BSRDC lists GED work, work release, church meetings, Moral Reconation Therapy, and National Career Readiness Certificate programming. These are in-custody offerings. The list does not promise that a person will enroll, finish, or continue in the same service after release. Post-release navigation is separate and may involve KDOC's Magoffin or District 11 resource manuals.

The facility does not publish a current property-return procedure or complaint deadline. Kentucky jail standards address itemization and handling of money and personal property at admission. A released person should inspect returned items, keep the receipt, and document a discrepancy to BSRDC in writing as soon as possible. Do not rely on an unverified historic deadline.

Big Sandy Jail Remains Open

BSRDC's four-county structure shaped a recent local issue. A June 2026 report described a closure threat tied to a KACO insurance bill exceeding $260,000. All four member counties committed funds, and the report said the jail would remain open. The accurate present statement is that it remained operating, not that it closed.

This history explains why current facility status should come from BSRDC and the participating counties. The legislative jail survey also describes member-county per diem costs and operational pressure as the inmate population changes. Those financial facts do not change the release-verification path: use the live roster for current display, then obtain the movement record for a booking that has ended.

Leaving Big Sandy in Paintsville

A Magoffin detainee may physically leave custody in Paintsville rather than Salyersville. No official fixed-route jail stop, jail-provided ride, taxi plan, rideshare rule, family waiting zone, or discharge-transport service was verified. US 460 connects the two communities, but that road link is not a release transportation program.

Families should call BSRDC to confirm the permitted pickup place and timing. Administrative office hours should not be treated as release hours. A transfer may also mean there is no community pickup at all. Confirm the destination before making travel plans.

Big Sandy Record Errors

BSRDC says it will try to verify and correct inmate-record errors when notified. Send the precise name, booking or date, page address or screenshot, and disputed field. If the error concerns release time or type, request the source record as well. The regional system controls its JailTracker data, so directing that issue only to the Magoffin Sheriff may delay review.

Use published numbers for every payment claim. BSRDC warns that callers falsely requested $2,500 through Apple Pay while promising an inmate's release. The facility says it and authorized outside agencies do not call families to solicit bond payment. Verify any bond instruction with BSRDC and the Magoffin court. Bond can end a jail booking, but it does not dismiss the pending case.

When records conflict, take the disputed field to the office that created it. BSRDC is the route for its JailTracker and booking data. KDOC handles a KOOL status or sentence field. The Magoffin Circuit Court Clerk handles access to docket entries and filed orders. Keep the earlier screenshot, retrieval time, written request, and agency response so any correction has a clear trail. A third-party mirror or older news story can supply a lead, but it should not override the current agency record.

A denied record request also does not prove that a release occurred or did not occur. Ask the agency to cite the specific exemption and explain how it applies. A requester may narrow the date range, request a redacted version, or seek review through the Kentucky Attorney General's open-record process. The goal is the existing custody record, not a new explanation that the agency must create.

No published BSRDC retention period was verified for former roster cards or release logs. Loss of public roster display does not mean the underlying agency record was destroyed. Request the existing record and let the custodian identify the applicable retention rule or lawful disposition. A search-engine cache cannot substitute for the jail's source record.
